Good questions

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for Benefits for Small Business?
Businesses in Newfoundland & Labrador — and across Atlantic Canada — that have been active for at least 6 months, with 2 to 10 employees at setup (the plan grows with you to 25). Employees must be Canadian residents under 75, covered by their provincial health plan, and working at least 20 hours a week. Solo operators (groups of one) aren't eligible.
Do my employees need medical exams or questionnaires?
No. Core benefits — life, AD&D, health, drugs, dental and travel — require no medical evidence at all. That's one of the biggest advantages of this plan for small teams.
How much of the premium do I have to pay as the employer?
You must contribute at least 25% of the premium — most owners choose 50% or more. The Long Term Disability add-on works the other way: it's 100% employee-paid, which keeps any disability benefits they receive tax-free. Use the cost-share slider in the calculator to model your split.
Can an employee opt out?
Enrolment is mandatory — that's what keeps pooled rates low and stable. The only exception: employees covered under a spouse's group plan can waive health and dental (they keep life & AD&D). At least two employees must remain covered for health and dental at all times.
Will my rates spike after a big claims year?
This plan pools claims across many small businesses, so no single group carries the weight of a bad year. Renewals happen each June 1 with a graduated rate guarantee: your first renewal moves only with plan-wide inflation, and adjustments phase in gradually after that.
How fast can we get covered — and is there a waiting period?
Complete applications are typically processed in about 5 business days. Employees actively at work on your start date are covered immediately with no waiting period; new hires join after 3 months.
Is the quote on this page the price I'll actually pay?
The calculator uses current small business benefits rates and the same math our advisors use, so it's a true estimate — not a teaser. Final premiums are confirmed at enrolment based on your submitted member details, and we'll walk you through every line before you sign anything.
